How To Install LightDM 1.8.5 On Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10, Linux Mint 17 And Linux Mint 16

Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, LightDM is a lightweight display manager used by default on Lubuntu, Xubuntu and Kubuntu, responsable for the login screen, the management of the X servers and facilitates remote logins via the XDMCP protocol.

The latest version available is LightDM GTK+ 1.8.5, which has been recently released, coming with a few improvements and updated translations. For information about his release, see the changelog.

How To Install LightDM 1.8.5 On Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10, Linux Mint 17 And Linux Mint 16

In this article I will show you how to install LightDM GTK+ Greeter 1.8.5 on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander, Linux Mint 17 Qiana and Linux Mint 16 Petra.

Because it will be available via PPA soon, installing LightDM GTK+ Greeter 1.8.5 on the listed Ubuntu and Linux Mint systems is easy. All you have to do is add the ppa to your system, update the local repository index and install the lightdm-gtk-greeter. Like this:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lightdm-gtk-greeter-team/stable
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install lightdm-gtk-greeter

In order to get the new LightDM GTK Greeter, restart your system:

$ sudo reboot
